this weekend in boston

Posted in events on March 26, 2008 by Georgia

i’ve been on vacation for most of the past two and a half weeks. i’m a jerk, albeit a relaxed jerk. expect lots of updates this week, including reviews of 8BITches: What is Chip-Hop? and The Hard to Get: This is the New Business Plan.

but first! there are a ton of cool shows happening in boston this weekend.

on thursday, at the oxfam cafe at tufts (less than a mile from my apartment – ahh, convenience!) 8 PM/$7/ALL AGES!

pterodactyl (myspace)
holy crap, i’ve never seen this band before, but their mp3s are blowing my mind a little bit. this brooklyn band definitely belongs on a bill with neptune, is all i can say at this point. songs on their website: polio | esses | safe like a train

neptune (myspace)
if you know me, you know i’m madly in love with this band. they’re in my top five boston bands, and probably my top 10-20 bands of all time, at this point. if you’ve never seen them live, i strongly recommend it. their new LP, gong lake, RULES, but nothing – i said, NOTHING - compares to a neptune show. songs on their website: the lighthouse | #17 | healer | #9 | equestrian phantasy currently downloadable on myspace (i LOVE this song more than is probably appropriate)

magic people (myspace)
oh, hello, here’s another weird boston band i really enjoy. john manson pontificates, sometimes wearing women’s underwear, with a backdrop of creepy synths and shit. download a live version of the lazy lazy killer on myspace and sugar mountain is downloadable on their website

hats & glasses
i saw this band play at castle greyskull (RIP) last year. or reasons i cannot explain, they remind me a bit of dinosaur jr. be warned this is probably a terribly inaccurate description. noisy indie rock with occasional sweet harmonies and a joyful bouncy feeling. i couldn’t find free downloads, but a download of their 6 song ep is only $2 here.

that was exhausting, and i should probably do real work at my day job for a while. more later.

we’ve arrived, after two days of driving. 2,000 miles, boston to austin.

we spent night one in a bluegrass house in east nashville, and now we’re staying with a guy whose family owns a bison farm. the sun is shining, and i’m about to go subject myself to lots and lots of music.

new band stuff is brewing with three of my favorite friend-musicians of the past five years.

it’ll also be the debut of me playing synths. crazy. i can’t say anything else until we practice more, but it’s noisy and loud and weird and awesome.
